Tuscany is a beautiful region on the west coast of Italy. It is said that the Italian language is born here, somewhere in Tuscany.
Gifted with many different territories it offers a rich choice of wine and traditions. Famous worldwide for its cypresses alley, Tuscany host one the most beautiful city of Italy: Florence!
In those beautiful landscapes, wine amateur and expert will find the Chianti region, Montecucco, Orcia DOC wines. But not only, in the UNESCO heritage site of Val d’Orcia is craft the Nobile di Montepulciano and a few hills away the Brunello di Montalcino.
There is plenty of wineries to discover. Here is a list of the tours we enjoy doing ourselves.
Montalcino is a fairy tale medieval village on top of a hill. Art, Italian coffe shops, local craftsman boutiques and of course wine shops populate the paved stone streets leading to the fortress.
Montalcino terroir gave birth to the world wide famous wine: Brunello di Montalcino. A great red wine of complex flavors.
Relais Osteria dell’Orcia is only at 20 minute drive. Our concierge can arrange for a private transfer so you can enjoy the pleasures of Tuscany mind free.
After a healthy breakfast, take a ride on the winding road and admire the postal card landscapes. We accompany you to Nostra Vita winery. A very special family run business, the owners are artists and decorated their fields with sculptures of all kind.
Montalcino wine guide
Find out here what is the difference in between:
the Brunello di Montalcino & the Rosso di Montalcino !
Your private transfer will then take you to visit Montalcino. There you can have lunch in one of the many restaurants and pizzeria. We believe Osteria Franci, in front of the fortress, offers a unique location and view point. Osticcio is a fine restaurant in the city center. If you prefer a true Italian pizza then Re di Macchia is the place to go.
After such a great day, our restaurant “La Vecchia Posta” and the serenity of our garden await you for a relaxing evening.
Montepulciano is beautiful and ancient city at the border of Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana. A must go to of any true Italian holiday.
Half way in between Montepulciano e Cortona, Poliziano winery welcomes wine lovers in a beautiful setup with visit to their cellar and vineyards.
Distant more or less 30 minutes by car from our Relais, the ride is very pleasant and take you on a journey on the winding road of Val d’Orcia. If you like, we can arrange a private driver for you.
After tasting the good wine, your tour of Montepulciano best wineries include a stop in Montepulciano medieval village. It is quite something to visit and host some of the best restaurants of the surrounding.
We personally like the table at “La bottega del Nobile” in the city center. Caffè Poliziano is a great place to eat as well and one the ancient restaurant of Montepulciano. If you like a cosy and Italian wine bar then “E Lucevan le Stelle” is the place to go.
Montepulciano wine guide
We truly love Montepulciano wines !

After a good Tuscan lunch and the visit of the fantastic Montepulciano city, ride to Avignonesi Winery. This great organic certified Tuscan winery has a twist! In fact, they offer wine tasting in their wine tasting school as well as more traditional wine tasting and winery tour. Worth your time for sure.
On your way back to Relais Osteria dell’Orcia and if you like to dine elsewhere then in our restaurant “La Vecchia Posta” you can have a romantic diner with a gorgeous sunset view over the Val d’Orcia at “Osteria la Porta“. This is a small restaurant in Monticchiello, we recommend booking the terrace in advance.
Located on the South point of Tuscany, Montecucco region is famous for its wine of course but as well for its beach and the pittoresque Podoliche Cow.
A bit further away from our Relais but no big deal for true wine lover. We can of course arrange for a private transfer so you do not have to battle to know who’s driving but instead have the time to appreciate Tuscany beautiful landscape.
We recommend you start your journey by Castello di Potentino. Their wines are representative of the delicate research of simbiosi between nature and Humans. Thanks to their micro-climate and volcanic soil they grow three of the most site delicate varieties together in one small vineyard: Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and Alicante.
A special place both for the wine, the location and the castel itself.
Ride West and find the restaurant “Antica Fattoria del Grottaione” for lunch. A restaurant Slow Food that serves traditional Tuscany dishes.
We know a good lunch can only mean you know want to discover more about Montecucco wines! Colle Massari castel is the next winery we recommend. They propose a few different wine each growing in a different terroir.
Montecucco Region has not yet given away all its secrets… Not so far from Relais Osteria dell’Orcia is awaiting the vast Artistic Garden of Daniel Spoerri. Admire all sort of sculptures, they do look alive in the flush nature of the park.
Back at our Relais, our Sommelier is always available to explain more about Tuscan wines and provide you with a wine tasting of all the different types of Tuscan wines.
Orcia is the name of the river passing through the Val d’Orcia UNESCO heritage site and so along our garden. Following the Orcia river is one of the rare occasion to walk on flat land in Val d’Orcia as the region is famous for its beautiful hilly landscapes which is ideal for wine cultivation and olive groves.
One cannot say he knows the Orcia DOC wines if he hasn’t taste the excellent wine of Podere Forte. This great estate includes a one Michelin star restaurant in Rocca d’Orcia our sister town at 5 minute by car from Relais Osteria dell’Orcia.
