Pienza, the ideal city according to Pope Pio II

In Val d’Orcia, the UNESCO heritage site of Tuscany, halfway between Montalcino and Montepulciano stands Pienza. Located just 20 minutes by car from Relais Osteria dell’Orcia, it can be seen from our large and green garden.

Once a medieval city, it was erase to the ground and rebuilt by Pope Pio II. Today its perfectly preserved Renaissance style buildings attract tourists from all over the world. Located at the top of one of the famous hills of the Val d’Orcia, Pienza offers extraordinary panorama.

The beauty of the buildings, the panoramic view and the enchanting atmosphere of this nice village has inspired big names of the modern era. Artists, painters, photographers… Franco Zeffirelli, an Italian film maker, recorded part of the film Romeo&Juliette here.

What to do in Pienza

Piazza Pio II is proportionate with great harmony. It brings dignity and solemnity to the surrounding buildings. The travertins stone used to build the later gives them a nice honey color. On one side of the square you can admire the beautiful “Dog Well“.

The Cathedral of Pienza, also called the Cathedral of the Assumption, houses important and remarkable paintings of the most renowned artists of the time. With an octagonal shape, the beautiful bell tower rises above the ancient crypt.

Corsignano parish is a beautiful and romantic little church distant only a few minutes by walk from the center of Pienza. Following the signs for “Pieve di Corsignano“, you will find it alongside fields of olive trees and in front of a fountain of spring water. Inside this church, built in the seventh century, one can admire the original baptismal font in which both Pope Pio II and his nephew Pope Pio III were baptized.

Palazzo Piccolomini is on the right side of the Duomo. It overlooks the wonderful roof garden with an exceptional panoramic view over the entire Orcia valley.

The Diocesan Museum established in 1901 house an art exhibition itinerary of 11 rooms. Are display art and ecclesiastical furnishings.

On the road that leads from Bagno Vignoni, and therefore that starts from Relais Osteria dell’Orcia, you will find signs for “La Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta“. A chapel located in the countryside of San Quirico d’Orcia. Isolated and surrounded by some cypress trees in the Senese hills, today it is one of the most famous postal cards in the Val d’Orcia.

Events in Pienza

Every September do not miss the famous Fiera del Cacio! This great festival is dedicated to Pienza Pecorino Cheese and other traditional local products. Is your mouth watering just thinking about it? Then know that, during the festival, you can have a taste of local products for free!

The event includes as well the “Palio del Cacio Fuso”, a fun folkloric game of ancient origins. Players from all parts of the country have to roll pecorino cheese around a small spindle of wood. Fun to watch !!!

Pienza Pecorino Cheese

Pienza is also the city of Pecorino di Pienza, locally know as “Cacio”! It is the famous cheese used to compose the Pici Cacio & Pepe, a dish of fresh handmade pasta typical of the Val d’Orcia. In the enchanting village you will find many small shops selling different varieties of Pecorino, to be tasted together with many other local products such as the wines of the Crete Senese, honey, pici, and more. In the countryside around the city you will find numerous family-run farms to visit providing Pecorino making workshops and cooking class. A nice opportunity to approach passionate producers and learn more about what we choose to eat.

How to get to Pienza from Bagno Vignoni

Relais Osteria dell’Orcia is 300m from the center of Bagno Vignoni, the road to go to Pienza by foot or by bike passes 50 meters from our entrance.

Reaching Pienza from Bagno Vignoni is easy! Do it by bike, by car and or even by motorbike. The most fit of us will even enjoy the hike on the hills and the fantastic views and winding roads of the Val d’Orcia countryside.

For all your excursions in Val d’Orcia, we recommend to use ALLTRAILS website and mobile application. They offer maps and routes that are very pleasant to use. Typing “Relais Osteria dell’Orcia” you will find the trails that starts from Bagno Vignoni and our Relais, for hiking and biking but even for a gentle romantic stroll. Easy to use!

How to get to Pienza from Siena and Florence

Nothing easier than reaching Pienza from Siena or even from Florence. From Siena continue take the Massetana Romana road in the direction of the Cassia Sud/SR2 road. After that, you simply continue along the SR2 road towards Pienza. You will pass through numerous Tuscan villages, therefore along the road you will also see signs for Buonconvento and San Quirico d’Orcia. Once you arrive in San Quirico d’Orcia, follow the signs for Chuisi and then take the SP146 road. Another 15 minutes by car and you will have arrived in Pienza. You will find parking lots all around the city walls. You can easily stay updated on the weather in Pienza directly on our website in the appropriate section.
